All of the drugs, drinking and fighting made me think it took the stress away it eloped me forget until was sober again, but that just gave me more of reason to do it more. My Definition of â€Å"Good† Writing My first attempt to complete this assignment began with a cavalier attitude. I didn't think I needed to grapple with the question because initially, I believed the answer was simple: 'good' writing is any writing that I'm not forced to read or create. Smirking to myself for having so quickly come up with a response, I sat down to fill three pages with words that all added up to my initial idea. Thirty minutes and a paragraph later, I saw that there was no way I was going to squeeze three pages out of the answer that had initially seemed so obvious, so I did what I always do when I have something I want to ignore: I opened up iTunes, and began surfing for songs as a means to put off working. I decided that my answer to what 'good' writing was had to begin with writing that reached its audience. I have a friend who really likes Elvis Presley and the Beatles. Personally, I can't stand their music any more than my friend can tolerate Mary J. Blige, but I have to admit that Elvis and the Beatles had to have reached their respective audiences to become so famous and remain popular for so long. This friend of mine is also a pretty big Shakespeare fan and has tried to get me to appreciate the poetry and humor that she swears is in the plays he wrote. I just don't get it, and that led me to something else: the ways a writer can reach an audience must be as varied as the potential audience itself. I guess that led me to a bit of a dead end. I decided to focus on the books I have read and enjoyed, and it dawned on me that there was one instance that the words to part of one of Shakespeare's plays made sense, but it wasn't because of Shakespeare, it was because of Maya Angelou's book I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. I had to read an excerpt from it called "Graduation." There's a part in the excerpt when the class valedictorian, Henry Reed, gets up and makes his graduation speech: it's titled "To Be or Not to Be" after Hamlet however, after connecting with Hamlet's soliloquy, I wasn't driven to read the remainder of the play as I had been driven to read the rest of Angelou's book. Turning away from books and the reading of writing, I began to wonder why I don't really like to write, and I realized that the writing I don't really like is assigned writingthe kind of writing that I am often told (in letter-grade terms) I'm not 'good' at. I write in my journal all the time, and I like doing that, and I think some of it is actually pretty good. I've even played around and written a few stories, but I basically hate writing papers for school. In a world where environmental issues are often so vast that solving them seems impossible, it is rare to encounter a regime which successfully addresses these problems. If we judge a regime’s effectiveness by its ability to change the behavior of its members and possibly even encourage others to join, then the whaling regime was in fact quite effective. The significant decrease in commercial whaling brought about by the International Whaling Commission (IWC)’s 1982 moratorium is proof in itself of the whaling regime’s effectiveness. That being said, the history of the regime has not been without imperfections, and these shortcomings will continue to shape the successes and failures of the whaling regime in the future. While the peak of whaling in recorded history occurred in the 1930s where close to 55,000 whales were caught each year, whaling has been practiced by people for centuries and was unregulated for most of that time period (Andresen 2000). However, in 1946, the Convention for the Regulation of Whaling (composed of 15 nations including the U.S.) met and created the International Whaling Commission in order to address the problem of declining whale stocks. Although the title of the book suggests the book is merely about animals, the story is a much more in depth analysis of the workings of society in Communist Russia. The animals are used as puppets to illustrate how the communist class system operated, and how Russian citizens responded to this, and how propaganda was used by early Russian leaders such as Stalin, and the effect this type of leadership had on the behaviour of the people of Russia. One thing which relates to the topic is how the pigs are favoured on Animal Farm. The main source for this was because their leader Napolean was a pig, the pigs were subject to favouritism by Napolean, and were given privileges that other animals were not given, such as sleeping in beds, wearing clothes and drinking beer. The pigs were also the only animals involved in making the vital decisions on Animal Farm. The fact emulates in a way how our Government tends to operate. The Government Party members are paid an exuberant amount of money, with this money the members of the Government can purchase costly cars and houses, if they wish to do so. They make all the important decisions about the country where as the tax payers rarely have a say in it. Another thing that â€Å"Animal Farm† and todays society have in common is that the powerless people are subject to propaganda . In â€Å" Animal Farm† Squealer and Napolean used propaganda by telling the animals that Snowball was a traitor, and convincing them that he was a criminal. They threatened that if Napolean was not in leadership Jones may come back. This happens in our society during the election period , the opposing parties all warn the public of the consequences of voting the other party, and how bad it would be if they were in power. The issue of Boxer the horse represents how people are used for their skills and talents. As soon as they are not needed they are disregarded. Boxer was the hardest worker on the farm, he contributed the most to the development of the windmill. As soon as Boxer was unable to continue working, Napolean got rid of him.
